Sharing KML and KMZ files

KML (Keyhole Markup Language) is a file type that displays geographical data in an Earth browser like Google Earth.  If you are familiar with the Web, you probably realize that an HTML or HTM file displays information in a Web browser.  A KML file does the same thing (displays information) in a different kind of browser (Google Earth).

A KML file represents a feature.

Find out more about KML files here, especially hosting them online for viewing in Maps

KMZ stands for KML Zipped.  A KMZ file can include images, icons, placemarks, and overlays, all in one file.   Use KMZ files to distribute multiple KML files, images, overlays, etc.

To Save Files in Google Earth:

Save a placemark as a KML file.

Save a folder as a KMZ file.

To do so, right-click on the file or folder in the Places window and select Save As.  Select the appropriate file format.

To distribute files to students:

Use a content managment system (Blackboard, Moodle) or a free wiki solution like pbwiki or Wikispaces.  Create a link and attach the file.  Students can then click on the link to launch in Google Earth.
